Goliath's first heavy transport assignment
David Watson Transport begins 2024 with a brand new (and very brightly coloured) addition to the DWT fleet. Meet Goliath, the new 8×4 beast hitting the road. Made for heavy haulage, this Volvo's D16 engine ensures optimum performance and fuel efficiency - perfect for the tasks Goliath will have to perform.
Behind a strikingly strong truck, you need a striking and strong trailer, and then you soon end up with a Broshuis trailer. Something DWT has been renting for years from John Hudson Trailers in Doncaster. As the loads to be transported often vary, renting a special trailer is much easier and offers more flexibility. With the flexibility and quality trailers offered by John Hudson Trailers, DWT can better serve its customers.
V32 driver, Lance Barrett, began the journey on 7 February from the Earls Colne depot to John Hudson Trailers in Doncaster, to couple a Broshuis 6-axle double extendable SL2 semi low loader. This trailer will be used for the entire project due to the weight and size of the load being carried. The 6-axle trailer is equipped with independent suspension and therefore has the lowest loading floor of its kind. For this project, it is therefore the trailer of choice. In addition to the low loading floor, the trailer is very stable thanks to its hydro suspension, which means it remains straight at all times. Essential for high loads.
On 8 February, Lance headed for the port of Liverpool to pick up the first 80,000 kg economiser unit. It rained early in the morning, it was cold and wet, not the most ideal weather conditions to work in, but loading went smoothly. The smooth steering and the ability to control the entire trailer by remote control make the job a lot easier and safer. From the port of Liverpool, Terry (transport supervisor) escorted Lance to the Lostock Sustainable Energy Plants near Northwich. Considering that this is the heaviest move DWT has ever made, this was a great achievement. A great first job for Goliath and the 6-axle SL2 trailer.
"Our fleet already benefits from a large selection of specialist Broshuis trailers, which have proven to be invaluable assets in enhancing our operational efficiency and reliability."

David Watson Transport from Colchester, UK has a fleet of over 110 combinations. The company has been transporting and lifting specialised loads for 35 years. With this first haul from Goliath, DWT is entering a new market of true heavy haulage up to 170 tonnes. Mark Watson (Managing Director) explains: "While we already operate a number of STGO CAT 2 vehicles, we've encountered client demands for load capacities that surpass this classification, demands we were previously unable to fulfil. This gap in our service offerings has led us to strategically acquire a CAT 3 vehicle, a move that significantly broadens our heavy haulage capabilities and ensures that we can accommodate the full spectrum of our clients' needs.
The choice to equip our CAT 3 vehicle with a Broshuis trailer for its inaugural job was an obvious one; our fleet already benefits from a large selection of specialist Broshuis trailers, which have proven to be invaluable assets in enhancing our operational efficiency and reliability. This expansion into CAT 3 heavy haulage is a clear reflection of our dedication to delivering the exceptional service quality that our clients have come to expect from us, now across an even more comprehensive range of haulage capacities."
We wish David Watson Transport many more great jobs with Goliath!
