Recovery and transport company VDC, based in Kruibeke, Belgium, hauls exceptional loads of up to 50 tonnes almost daily. To expand their fleet, they chose a three-axle, self-tracking semi low loader with a deck height of just 78 cm and an impressively low tare weight. “Exactly the way I wanted it,” says managing director Jonas Van de Cloot.
A personalised purchase process
From the very first contact, communication with Broshuis was smooth and professional. “Talking with Rogier van der Slik was a real pleasure,” says Jonas. What really made the difference, he explains, was the combination of “quality, expertise, and the willingness to think alongside the customer.” As Jonas puts it: “Even with a relatively straightforward trailer, we were able to have it customised to our needs.” Extra lashing rings, a load table, and special container positions with adapters make the trailer highly versatile.
After Rogier had presented a tailored quotation at the office, several proposals were carefully compared. Shortly afterwards, Rogier and Jonas took another walk around the existing trailers and tractor units to determine the most suitable dimensions for the new trailer. “We went through everything point by point to arrive at a 100% perfect fit, and that’s exactly how it was delivered,” Jonas says
Low deck height and lightweight design
In the end, VDC opted for a 3-axle semi low loader with self-tracking steering and 205 tyres, offering a deck height of just 78 cm. “For me, the low deck height of 78 cm on a semi, and the extremely low tare weight, were the most important factors,” Jonas explains. These specifications allow VDC to transport loads efficiently and safely, even under the demanding conditions they often encounter. The trailer is also fitted with several smart storage compartments and extra toolboxes, so that all necessary tools and materials are always within easy reach. It's finished in VDC’s signature red and yellow livery, making it a perfect fit for the fleet.
The trailer not only accommodates taller loads but is also light enough to operate efficiently within Belgian transport regulations. “With the right wheelbase and a suitable tractor, this combination allows us to transport both divisible and indivisible exceptional loads of just under 30 tonnes across Belgian motorways, within the 48-tonne legal limit,” Jonas adds.
Reliable and built for daily use
The trailer has been in full use since 17 April, and it shows. “We’re pleased with it. It performs well and is out on the road almost every day,” says Jonas. He’s also impressed with how user-friendly it is: “Of course, it’s still work, but good equipment makes it fun to do.” The trailer fits seamlessly into VDC’s fleet.
Specialists in exceptional transport
Founded in 2018 by Jonas Van de Cloot as a spin-off from the family business active since 1977, VDC focuses entirely on international recovery, crane hire, and special transport services. “Roughly 80% of the transport we do falls under exceptional loads, in all forms, up to 50 tonnes,” Jonas explains. The fleet includes recovery trucks for both light and heavy vehicles, crane trucks, and several semi low loaders. This latest addition is yet another specialist trailer for their operations.
